Infection Prevention & Control

West Nipissing General Hospital is dedicated to preventing and controlling the spread of infections between all people.

We encourage you to postpone your visit to WNGH if you

  • Have cold or flu-like symptoms (fever, cough, sore throat, runny/stuffy nose, headache, chills, or unusual fatigue); and/or

  • Have recently visited a healthcare or congregate care facility experiencing an outbreak.

All visitors should:

  • Wash hands with alcohol hand rub, or soap and water when entering the hospital, and before touching a patient.

  • Check in with the nurse’s station staff before going to see a patient. Follow their instructions.

  • Limit the number of people visiting a patient at any one time. Nursing may limit the numbers of visitors as well.

  • After your visit and as soon as possible, clean your hand with either alcohol hand rub, or soap and water before leaving the hospital.

Patient Safety Indicators

To support the provincial government’s public reporting regime and to continue to enhance our quality and safety program, WNGH reports a number of infection rates as they relate to health care associated infections. Public reporting will allow us to establish a baseline from which we can track our rates over time. If we feel our rates have risen above our baseline, we can look internally at our processes, identify areas for improvement, and implement strategies to reduce the incidence of these infections in our organization. Patients should know that your hospital is safe, that the care you receive here is excellent, and that every effort is being made to ensure you continue to receive safe, high quality care.

The following indicators will be posted, both here and on the Health Quality Ontario website.

Hand Hygiene Statistics 2024-2025

The MOHLTC provincial hand hygiene campaign, Just Clean your Hands, was launched in our hospital in June 2008. We want to see a steady improvement in compliance rate. We are all working toward changing the culture of hand hygiene in our hospital by increasing awareness, by improving immediate access to hand hygiene product at the right time and by providing ongoing education.
